PURPOSE: To readily obtain a 3-alkylpyrrole compound useful as a raw material for functional high molecular materials from highly safe and inexpensive industrial raw materials under a mild condition without requiring the difficult treatment of waste materials.
CONSTITUTION: When a 3-acylpyrrole compound of formula I (R1 is alkyl, aryl) is reduced with sodium borohydride, a hydroxyether compound of formula II (R2 is alkyl; n is an integer) is added to the reaction system for the high activation of the sodium borohydride to directly reduce the carbonyl group into the methylene group through an alcohol compound, thereby profitably producing the corresponding 3-alkylpyrrole compound. The sodium borohydride is used in an amount of ≥1mole, preferably 1,5-2moles, per mole of the compound of formula I, and the compound of formula II is employed an amount of ordinarily ≥2moles, preferably 3-5moles for favorable reaction performance.
