To highly selectively produce the subject compound in a high yield by maintaining the concentration of chlorine within a constant range on a chlorination reaction and keeping the reaction temperature within a specified range.
This method for producing a 3-chlorocycloalkene of formula II [(n) is 1-6] comprises chlorinating a cycloalkene of formula I (for example, a 5-10C cycloalkene, preferably a 5-8C cycloalkene, especially cyclohexene) with a gaseous mixture of chlorine without inert gas having a chlorine concentration of 0.01-2 g/liter, preferably 0.1-1 g/liter, at the melting point of the cycloalkene to 10°C, preferably -40°C to 0°C. The chlorine is used in an amount of 0.1-3 moles per mole of the cycloalkene, and the chlorination can be carried out in a solvent-free state or in a solvent (for example, carbon tetrachloride) inert to the chlorine preferably under the irradiation of light.
