To readily produce the subject compound useful as a photographic yellow coupler or its intermediate or an intermediate for producing medicines in high yield by using an organic base.
An organic base having preferably 120-190°C boiling point (e.g. triethylamine) is used to produce the objective compound represented by formula I [R1 is an alkyl, a cycloalkyl or the like; R2 is chlorine, an alkoxy or the like; R3 is a substituent group; (n) is 0-4; R4 and R5 are each H, an alkyl or the like] (e.g. a compound represented by formula II). The compound represented by formula I is preferably obtained by reacting one mol of a compound represented by formula III (e.g. a compound represented by formula IV) with preferably 1-1.5 mol of a compound represented by formula V (e.g. a compound represented by formula VI) preferably by using a solvent (e.g. an aromatic hydrocarbon-based solvent) at 60-150°C for 1-20 h. After completing the reaction the compound can be separated from a reactional solution and obtained by distillation or recrystallization.
