PURPOSE: To industrially and advantageously obtain the title compound in high yield in producing the title compound by chlorinating 3,5-di-t-butyltoluene with a chlorine gas in the presence of Lewis acid and sulfur of simple substance by specifying a molar ratio of sulfur of simple substance/Lewis acid.
CONSTITUTION: In producing 3,5-di-t-butyl-2,6-dichlorotoluene useful as an intermediate for 2,6-dichlorotoluene (intermediate for agricultural chemicals or medicines by chlorinating 3,5-di-t-butyltoluene with a chlorine gas in the presence of Lewis acid and sulfur of simple substance, the reaction is carried out in a molar ratio of simple substance/Lewis acid of 8-25, preferably 10-20 and preferably in the absence of a solvent to give the objective compound in high yield of 80% with a much smaller amount of Lewis acid than that by a well-known method and industrially and extremely advantageously because of no use of solvent.
