PURPOSE: To obtain a 4-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl)benzoyl chloride, etc., in good yield by reacting trans-1-propyl-4-phenylcyclohexane, etc., with oxalyl chloride in the presence of a Lewis acid.
CONSTITUTION: A compound expressed by formula I (R is 1-20C alkyl) is reacted with oxalyl chloride in the presence of a Lewis acid (e.g. anhydrous AlCl3) to afford a compound expressed by formula II, which is then hydrolyzed in the presence of an alkali to provide a compound expressed by formula III. Alternatively, the compound expressed by formula II is reacted with a compound expressed by formula IV (R2 is H, F, CN, alkyl, alkoxyl, alkoxycarbonyl, etc.; m is 0 or 1; rings A and B are phenylene, etc.) in the presence of a basic compound to afford a compound, expressed by formula V and useful as a liquid crystal compound. The compounds expressed by formulas II and III which are intermediates therefor can be obtained from the compound expressed by formula I in good yield in one step.
