To produce the subject compound in high selectivity and yield by oxidizing a specific aldehyde in an organic solvent in the presence of a catalyst with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in no need of large amounts of chromium compound, manganese compound and an alkaline medium.
9,10-Dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthacene-9-carbaldehyde of formula I [R1 and R2 are each H, CN, OOCR4, COOR4 or (CH2)nR5 (R4 is a 1-10C alkyl, etc.; R5 is OH or a CH2-NH-1-4C alkyl); n is 1-3; R3 is H, a halogen, CN, CHO, COOH, NO2 or SO3H] is oxidized with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst [Co(CH3COO)2x4H2O, Mn(CH3COO)2x4H2O] in an organic diluent (for example, a 1-6C carboxylic acid as acetic acid or propionic acid) at 15-180°C, preferably 20-120°C under the normal pressure to give the objective compound of formula II.
