Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain 9α-hydroxy-4-androstene-3,17-dione by decomposing the side chain of a naturally occurring sterol with new microorganisms belonging to the genus Mycobacterium.

CONSTITUTION: An 1,2-steriod dehydrogenase-deleted strain of Mycobacterium roseum species capable of decomposing the side chain of naturally occurring sterols, pref. Mycobacterium roseum sp. rov. 1108/1 (NCAIM B (P) 000339), is subjected to aerobic fluid fermentation in an agar medium with a (2:1) mixture of naturally occurring sterols, e.g. β-sitosterol and campesterol, as substrate, and the objective 9α-hydroxy-4-androstene-3,17-dione formed is collected.
