Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a new process for manufacturing high purity acetic acid and/or acetic anhydride having reduced amount of an organic iodide and a carbonyl impurity in acetic acid and/or acetic anhydride produced by the carbonylation process in the presence of a rhodium catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Acetic acid and/or acetic anhydride is produced by continuously reacting at least one component selected from methanol, methyl acetate and dimethyl ether with carbon monoxide in the presence of a rhodium catalyst, an iodide salt and methyl iodide. In this process, the acetoaldehyde content in the reaction liquid is controlled ≤400ppm through out the reaction and the obtained liquid acetic acid and/or acetic anhydride is made to contact with a strongly acidic cation exchange resin in which at least 1% of the active sites are replaced with ions of silver and/or mercury.
