PURPOSE: To economically produce acetic acid in reacting methanol with carbon monoxide in the presence of a rhodium-containing solid catalyst and an alkyl iodide, by efficiently carrying out the reaction under low reaction pressure and under a condition of highly catalytic activity condition.
CONSTITUTION: In a method for forming acetic acid by reacting methanol with carbon monoxide in the presence of a rhodium-containing solid catalyst and an alkyl iodide in a reaction solvent, (i) a catalyst obtained by supporting rhodium on an insoluble resin having ≥10% degree of crosslinking, containing a pyridine ring in the resin structure is used as the rhodium-containing solid catalyst, (ii) a reaction solvent including ≥2C carbonyl group-containing organic solvent is used as the reaction solvent and the amount of the reaction solvent in the reactor is ≥0.30 pts.wt. based on 1 pt.wt. methanol, (iii) the partial pressure of carbon monoxide in the reaction system is 7-30kg/cm2 and the whole reaction pressure is 15-60kg/cm2G and (iv) the reaction temperature is 140-250°C to produce acetic acid by carbonylating methanol.
