Abstract:
PURPOSE: To prevent the leakage of the acid in an acid chamber into a salt chamber and the leakage of the alkali in an alkali chamber into the salt chamber even when the seal between the chamber frame constituting the acid and alkali chambers by bipolar membrane electrodialysis and the ion-exchange membrane is incomplete and consequently to prevent the damage of an anion- exchange membrane.
CONSTITUTION: A cation-exchange membrane C, a bipolar membrane B and an anion-exchange membrane A are successively arranged between an anode 11 and a cathode 12 to form a salt chamber 15, acid chamber 14 and alkali chamber 13, an aq. salt soln. is supplied to the salt chamber 15, and the acid and alkali are discharged as the product respectively from the acid chamber 14 and alkali chamber 13. In this case, the linear velocity of the soln. in the salt chamber 15 is made higher than that in the acid chamber 14 and alkali chamber 13, e.g. by ≥1.1 times.
