PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a fiber treatment, paper processing agent, coating compound, etc., in high purity and in high yield, by reacting acrylic acid or methacrylic acid methyl ester with an alkylamino- alcohol by the use of an alkali metallic hydrogencarbonate.
CONSTITUTION: An acrylic acid or a methacrylic acid methyl ester and an alkylamino-alcohol shown by formula R1R2N(CH2)nOH (R1 is H or 2W6C alkyl; R2 is 1W6C alkyl; n is 2W6) are subjected to ester exchange reaction at 50W120°C at 10W760mmHg for 3.5W7hr to give the aimed substance. In the reaction, an alkali metallic hydrogencarbonate selected from potassium hydrogencarbonate, rubidium hydrogencarbonate and cesium hydrogen hydrogencarbonate is used as a catalyst. The amount of the acrylic acid or methacrylic acid methyl ester used is 1.2W10 moles bases on 1mol alkylamino- alcohol and the amount of the catalyst used is 0.01W2wt% based on the total amounts of the starting raw materials.
