PURPOSE: To prevent formation of polymerization residual and obtain the titled polymer, by polymerizing acrylonitrile alone or a blend of the acrylonitrile as a principal component with another ethylenic unsaturated monomer in the presence of a specific suspension stabilizer in an aqueous medium at a specific pH.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylonitrile alone or a blend of the acrylonitrile as a principal component with another ethylenic unsaturated monomer, e.g. styrene derivative, nitrile, vinylketone, etc., copolymerizable therewith is suspension polymerized in an aqueous medium. In the process, a suspension stabilizer consisting of (A) an alkyl cellulose, e.g. methyl cellulose, etc., and (B) one or more of compounds selected from polyoxyethylene polyoxypropylene block polymer and gelatin is used as a suspension stabilizer to control the pH of the aqueous medium at 2W6.5.
EFFECT: The beady polymer, having a large and uniform particle size and suitable as substrate resins for ion exchange resins, chelate resins, etc. is obtained.
