PURPOSE: To produce an acylated imidazole in one step industrially advantageously at a low cost by directly acylating the corresponding substituted or unsubstituted imidazole with a common acylating agent in a vapor phase in the presence of an acidic metal oxide and/or a phosphate.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (wherein R1 to R4 are each a 1-12C alkyl, a 1-12C alkenyl, an aryl, an aralkyl or an alkylaryl; at least one of R2 and R3 is H, and R4 is H) is acylated with a common acylating agent represented by formula II (wherein R5 is a group being other than H and defined in R1 to R4 or COOH; and Y is a halide alkoxyl, an acyloxy or OH) in a vapor phase in the presence of, for example, an acidic metal oxide such as an acidic oxide of a group II-IV metal or a group II-VI subgroup element (especially, silica gel, diatomaceous earth or quartz) and/or a phosphate (especially, zirconium phosphate, boron phosphate or aluminum phosphate) to obtain the objective compound of formula III advantageously.
