PURPOSE: To obtain an acylphenol compound useful as agricultural chemicals, photographic chemicals, UV-absorbers, etc., with simple operation, in high yield and selectivity, by reacting a carboxylic acid aromatic ester in the presence of an ion-exchanging lamellar clay catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A carboxylic acid aromatic ester such as phenyl benzoate, α- naphthyl benzoate, etc. is made to react in the presence of the ion-exchanging lamellar clay catalyst such as synthetic mica, montmorillonite, vermiculite, etc., preferably in lquid phase at 100W350°C, preferably at 150W250°C for 0.1W10hr under reduced pressure, atmospheric pressure or positive pressure to obtain an acylphenol such as hydroxybenzophenone, phenyl α-naphthoate, etc.
EFFECT: The objective compound can be produced without using a large amount of catalyst, and using a simplified separation and purification process prior to the hydrolysis of the reaction product.
