PURPOSE: To obtain a modified polyethylene excellent in adhesive property by a simple operation within a short time, by reacting powder-form medium-low pressure process polyethylene with a polar group-containing vinyl compound in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator.
CONSTITUTION: Powder-form medium-low pressure process polyethylene is immersed and dispersed in an organic solvent in which it can not dissolve, and then reacted with a polar group-containing vinyl compound in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator at a temperature below the m.p. of the polyethylene. Then, the reaction is continued at this temperature, while the organic solvent is being distilled out of the system. Particularly preferable examples of the polar group-containing vinyl compounds used are vinylic unsaturated carboxylic acids having an epoxy group in the molecule, such as glycidyl acrylate and glycidyl methacrylate.
