PURPOSE: To obtain the subject aliphatic aldehyde trimers in good yield with facilitated separation of a catalyst without causing problems of waste water treatment by cyclizing an aliphatic aldehyde in the presence of a specific catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A 2-4C aliphatic aldehyde having the chlorinated 2-position, i.e., monochloroacetaldehyde, 2-chloropropionaldehyde or 2-chlorobutyraldehyde is cyclized in the presence of a catalyst selected from the group consisting of zeolite, heteropoly-acids and Lewis acids in an organic solvent to afford the objective aliphatic aldehyde trimers of the formula (R is H, methyl or ethyl). All the trimers can stably be preserved at ordinary temperature for a long period and are depolymerized by thermal distillation in the presence of an acid catalyst to provide high-purity monomers. Thereby, the aldehyde can be preserved as the trimers, depolymerized in use, converted into the monomers and used for reaction.
