Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate the production of an aliphatic polyester having a high degree of polymerization and a high reduced viscosity by adding a specified amount of a diaryl aliphatic dicarboxylate to a specified aliphatic polyester and reacting the mixture in a melted state in e.g. a vacuum.
SOLUTION: A 4-10C aliphatic dicarboxylic acid component is reacted with a 2-6C aliphatic diol component to produce an aliphatic polyester having a reduced viscosity of 0.3 or above as measured in a phenol/1,1,2,2- tetrachloroethane mixed solvent (weight 6/4) under conditions including a concentration of 1.2g/dl and a temperature of 35°C and a terminal-COOH content o 40mol/106g or below. To this polyester, a diaryl aliphatic dicarboxylate represented by formula I (wherein R is a 2-8C bivalent aliphatic residue; and Ar is a 6-12C aryl) and used in an amount satisfying formula II [wherein X is the terminal-OH content (mol/106g) of the polyester; Y is the amount (wt.% based on the polymer) of the compound of formula I; and W is the molecular weight of the compound of formula I], and the mixture is reacted in a melted state in e.g. a vacuum to obtain a polyester having a high degree of polymerization and a reduced viscosity of 1 or above.
