PURPOSE: To obtain subject compound in high purity and yield by blowing chlorine gas into a mercaptan or disulfidely using, inorganic acid and/or organic acid as an acid solvent followed by blowing air into the system for a specified time.
CONSTITUTION: Using an organic or inorganic acid or their mixture as an acid solvent instead of using water as reaction solvent, chlorine gas is blown into a mercaptan or disulfide as shown in the reaction formulas (R is an alkyl) followed by blowing air into the system for a specified time, thus obtaining the objective alkanesulfonyl chloride with neary no production of main chain- chlorinated products as byproducts. In this method, as the alkane, a 2-4C compound is esp. pref. By this method, the objective compound can be safely obtained by a simple operation by blowing chlorine gas followed by air to advance homogeneous chlorination reaction. The alkanesulfonyl chloride is useful as an intermediate for medicines and agrochemicals.
