To produce an alkanolamine ester of high neutralization ratio by subjecting an aliphatic lower alkyl ester and alkanolamine to transesterification, and removing the catalyst, etc., which remain in the product after the transesterification to the outside of the reaction system.
This alkanolamine ester is produced by subjecting a lower alkyl ester of a saturated or unsaturated fatty acid and an alkanolamine to transesterification in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, adding to the obtained transesterification product a 20-60wt.% solution of acidic substances in a mixture of water and an organic solvent which dissolves both the acidic substances and the formed alkanolamine ester at a ratio of the organic solvent to water in the range of (99.9:0.1) to (70:30) to neutralize the alkaline catalyst in the transesterification product, and removing the catalyst.
