PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as pharmaceuticals, their intermediates, reducing agents, antioxidants, herbicides, etc., in high yield, by reacting a halogenobenzene derivative with alcohols in the presence of copper or a copper compound, amines and a base.
CONSTITUTION: A halogenobenzene derivative of formula I (X is halogen; Y is bivalent linking group; R1 is H, alkyl, aryl, heterocyclic residue, etc.; R2 is group which can be substituted to aromatic ring; m is 0W4; Y may form a 5W7-membered ring by independently bonding with R1 or R2; etc.] is made to react with alcohols of formula R3OH (R3 is alkyl) to obtain the objective compound of formula II. The reaction is carried out in the presence of copper or a copper compound (e.g. copper acetate), amines (e.g. 2,2'-dipyridyl) and a base (e.g. NaOH) at -20W+100°C. The amount of the alcohols is 1.0W200mol. per 1mol. of the compound of formula I.
