PURPOSE: To advantageously obtain an alkoxylated aromatic compd. from a mono- or polyhalogenated aromatic compd. and an alkaline (earth) metal alcoholate without using a methyl formate which is volatile at room temp. and is not easily handled.
CONSTITUTION: A compd. expressed by formula I is made to react with a compd. expressed by formula II in the presence of copper or a copper compd. to obtain a compd. expressed by formula III. In formula I, (n) is an integer of 1 to 6, R0 is an aromatic cyclic group with substituents and having 5 or more atoms in the ring, or a single or polycyclic aromatic carbon ring group; or single or polycyclic aromatic heterocyclic group having one or more kinds of heteroatoms (O, N, S); X is I, Br, Cl. In formula II, M is an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal, (m) is the valence of M, R is a 1 to 12 C hydrocarbon group, a mono or polycyclic satd. or unsatd. alicyclic group, a straight/ branched and satd/unsatd. alicyclic or aryl aliphatic group. In this process, the reaction is effected in the presence of an effective amt. of CO2 or a compd. which easily produces CO2 in the reaction medium to advantageously obtain the objective compd.
