To produce a high yield, simply and in a short time an alkyl aniline useful for an antioxidant, an active component of color photo-developing agent and synthetic intermediate for many compounds by carrying out a reaction of a nitrobenzene with an aldehyde in the presence of a metal catalyst under pressure with hydrogen.
This alkyl aniline is produced by carrying out the reaction of (B) a nitrobenzene of formula I [R1 is a substitutent such as an alkyl, an (oxy)aryl, a (cabonyl)alkoxy, an (amino)acyl, an (alkoxy)carbonyl, m is 0-5] and (C) an aldehyde of formula: R2-CHO[R2 is a 1-13C (branched)alkyl, an aryl such as a phenyl and a naphtyl or H] in the presence of (A) a metal catalyst such as palladium-charcoal under pressure with hydrogen (for example 20-200kg/cm2, especially 30-200kg/cm2) at 40-200°C. This aniline is expressed by the formula II (R3, R4 are each H, or a substitutent group of formula: -CH2-R2 while R3, R4 are not simultaneously H).
