Abstract:
PURPOSE:To increase the efficiency of electrolytic operation when alkylphenolsulfonic acids represented by a specified general formula are anodically oxidized in an electrolytic cell, by subjecting anolyte to extraction at the outside of the cell and returning the residual soln. CONSTITUTION:An electrolytic cell 1 is divided into anode and cathode chambers with a diaphragm 2, the anode 3 and the cathode 4 are separately set in the chambers and the chambers are separately filled with anolyte 5 and catholyte 6. An aq. soln. of alkylphenolsulfonic acid or a water soluble salt thereof represented by the formula (where R is 1-3C alkyl, n=1, 2 or 3 and X is H, Na, K or NH4) is used as the anolyte 5. Electrolytic oxidation is carried out in the cell 1 and the anolyte 5 is continuously or intermittently drawn out of the anode chamber of the cell 1 during the electrolytic oxidation. The drawn anolyte 5 is introduced into an extractor 7 installed at the outside of the cell 1, alkylbenzophenone produced by the electrolytic oxidation reaction is extracted with a solvent in the extractor 7 and the residual soln. is returned to the anode chamber.
