PURPOSE: To obtain an allyl-substituted phenolic compound in high selectivity and yield while suppressing side reactions by allyletherifying a phenol with an allyl halide in an aqueous solvent and subjecting the reaction product to Claisen rearrangement reaction in the absence of solvent.
CONSTITUTION: An allyl-substituted phenolic compound can be easily produced in high selectivity and conversion by successive two steps comprising the allyl- etherification of a phenolic compound by the reaction of a phenolic compound with an allyl halide in the presence of an aqueous solvent and the Claisen rearrangement of the obtained reaction mixture in the absence of solvent. The process is industrially advantageous because the side reactions, especially polymerization reactions are suppressed to attain high yield. The allyl-substituted phenols are useful as intermediate raw materials for various fine chemicals, curing agents of epoxy resin or maleimide resin, etc.
