PURPOSE: The product resulting from the low-temperature reaction between α-bromophynylacetnitrile, an alcohol and hydrogen halide is further made to react with water to readily produce high-purity title compound used as an intermediate of an insectivide for agriculture with no formation of by-products.
CONSTITUTION: Equimolar or a little excess amounts of an alcohol such as methanol and a hydrogen halide such as hydrogen chloride are made to react with α-bromophenylacetnitrile of formula I at low temperatures, preferably -10W+10°C to give α-bromo-β-alkoxy-β-alkoxy-β-iminoethylbenzene hydrohalide salt of formula II (R is alkyl; X is halogen). The product is made to react with an equimolar or more amount of water to give the compound of formula III.
