Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce aluminum contg. extremely low sodium by adding phosphorus or phosphorous compounds to molten aluminum of high purity by trace amount and agitating the mixture.
CONSTITUTION: Phosphorus or phosphorus compounds are added to molten aluminum of ≥99.0% purity which has been melted and held by 0.005-0.05% expressed in terms of phosphorus atom and the mixture is agitated. Aluminum metal having ≥99.0% purity, contg. ≥3ppm sodium and obtained by primary electrolysis is used as raw material. The molten aluminum after the addition of phosphorus and phosphorus compounds and agitation treatment is preferably purified by segregation or three-layer electrolysis. In this way, aluminum of ≥99.5% purity contg. ≤5ppm phosphorus and ≤1ppm, preferably ≤10ppb sodium is obtained.
