To industrially advantageously produce an amine useful as an intermediate for pharmaceutics and agrochemical at a high volume efficiency by treating a substituted amide with a reducing agent obtained from a metal borohydride and methyl iodide, etc.
This amine is produced by using a substituted amide of formula I (R1, R2 and R3 are each H, a 1-20C alkyl, 7-20C aralkyl, etc.), as a starting material, and a reducing agent using a metal borohydride (e.g. sodium borohydride) in a quantity of 1-5mol times, preferably 1.5-3mol times as much as the quantity of amide, and a compound of formula, R4X (R4 is H or 1-3C alkyl; X is a halogen), e.g. methyl iodide, in a quantity of 1-5 times in weight as much as the quantity of amide ordinarily at reaction temperature of 0-70°C, preferably at 40-60°C, for a period of reaction time of 1-10hr after dropping of the compound of formula I, and recovering the amine of formula II (e.g. N-ethylaniline) of formula II from the reaction liquid.
