Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a high-purity aminopolycarboxylic acid having chelating ability, useful as a metal ion masking agent, excellent in biodegradability, in high yield.

CONSTITUTION: An aspartic acid or a glutamic acid is reacted with an aldehyde compound or an acetal compound and hydrogen cyanide or a cyanide in a solvent (e.g. water) in the presence of a base (e.g. NaOH) at 10-160°C for 1-24 hours to give a compound of the formula (R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon, an aryl or a heterocyclic; n is 1 or 2; M1 to M3 are each H or a cation). The amount of the aldehyde compound or the acetal compound used is 0.2-30mols based on 1mol of the aspartic acid or the glutamic acid and that of hydrogen cyanide or the cyanide is 0.2-30mols.
