Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an anion exchange resin with high exchange capacity by quaternizing a tertiary amino group-bearing resin by the use of an alkyl halide in the presence of a specific amount of an alcohol so as to raise the degree of conversion.
SOLUTION: This anion exchange resin is obtained by reaction of a resin bearing tertiary amino group (pref. a heterocyclic group such as pyridyl, pyrimidinyl or imidazolyl)(a linear polymer or crosslinked polymer, pref. a copolymer from a monomer bearing both t-amino and vinyl groups and another monomer bearing vinyl group) with 100 pts.wt. of an alkyl halide (pref. methyl iodide, ethyl iodide, ethyl bromide or butyl bromide) in the presence of 0.5-10.0 (pref. 0.8-7) pts.wt. of an alcohol (pref. methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol or 2- propanol) by the use of a polymerization initiator such as benzoyl peroxide.
