Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain antimicrobial sand by mixing an antimicrobial metal-contg, specific phosphate and zinc oxide or titanium dioxide with vitreous power and sand followed by heating to soften the vitreous powder and carry the antimicrobial agent on the surface of the sand.
CONSTITUTION: First, vitreous powder and sand are mixed with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and an antimicrobial agent of formula I (M1 is a monovalent metal ion selected from Ag, Cu, Zn, Sn, Hg, Pb, Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, As, Sb, Bi, Ba, Cd and Cr; A is an m-valent ion selected from alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium and H ions; (n) is 0-6; (a) and (b) are each a positive number satisfying (1a+mb)=1 or 2; (c) and (d) are such that, when (1a+mb)=1, (c) is 2, and (d) is 3, and when (1a+mb)=2, (c) is 1 and (d) is 2) (e.g. a compound of formula II). Secondly, the mixture is heated to a temperature higher than the softening temperature of the vitreous powder to soften the powder and to make the antimicrobial agent carry on the surface of the sand via the vitreous powder, thus obtaining the objective antimicrobial sand, which is excellent in sustainability and antimicrobial effect.
