Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject fiber suitable for producing nonwoven fabric absorptive products of good feel of touch through blending with other fiber(s) by exchange reaction of antimicrobial metal ion with the carboxyl (metal salt) groups of the polymer constituting the original fiber without any loss of the above metal ion during the production process for the aimed fiber.
SOLUTION: This antimicrobial and water-absorbing fiber is obtained by the following process: an exchange reaction of at least one kind of antimicrobial metal ion selected from silver, copper and zinc ions with the carboxyl (alkali metal salt) groups of water-absorbing fiber ≥10 g/g in water absorption consisting of the corresponding polymer having carboxyl groups (metal salts) is performed in 1-propanol followed by filtering unreacted products away and then washing the resultant fiber with 1-propanol and drying at 30-90°C to effect including the antimicrobial metal ion(s) at 100 ppm in the fiber and affording the fiber with antimicrobial nature. Using this fiber, nonwoven fabric absorptive products containing the fiber at 5-50 wt.% can be obtained.
