Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain the subject dispersion having small dispersed particle size, high stability and high solid concentration by emulsifying and dispersing a copolymer insoluble in water of room temperature and composed of an ethylene- vinyl alcohol copolymer component bonded to a component containing ionic group. CONSTITUTION:The copolymer to be used as a starting material for the subject dispersion is insoluble in water at room temperature and composed of (A) an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer component having an ethylene content of 15-65mol% and (B) 0.1-5mol% (based on the copolymer component) of a component containing ionic group (e.g. sodium acrylate) and bonded to the component A in the form of block or graft. The copolymer is dissolved in a 50/50 (in terms of weight) mixed solvent of water and methanol at 65 deg.C, the solution is cooled to room temperature under stirring and the obtained emulsified dispersion is evaporated under reduced pressure under stirring to evaporate methanol. The objective aqueous emulsion dispersion of a stably emulsified and dispersed ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer having small particle diameter can be produced by this process.
