To obtain, in high yield with long catalyst life and little byproducts, an aromatic amine useful as an intermediate for plant protectants by dehydrogenating an aliphatic amine in the presence of a specified heterogeneous catalyst at specified temperature and pressure.
This aromatic amine of formura II is obtained by dehydrogenation of (B) an aliphatic amine of formula I (R1 to R5 are each H, a 1-12C alkyl or a 3-12C cycloalkyl) in the presence of (A) a catalyst as a heterogeneous catalyst consisting of 30-100 wt.% (A1) Pd supported on a carrier consisting of oxides of rare earth metals or Group IVb oxides or (A2) Pt/Pd mixture supported on a carrier consisting of alumina, oxides of rare earth metals or Group IVb oxides, at 150-300°C under the pressure of 0.01-50 bar.
