PURPOSE: To produce the subject compound in a good yield and in a good purity without a specific device by treating the salt of an aromatic diazonium compound with a fluoro Lewis acid.
CONSTITUTION: The salt of a compound of formula I [R is a group of formula II (R1-R5 are H, halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxycarbonyl, NO2, lower alkoxy, CN), an unsaturated heterocyclic ring having one to four residues selected from a group consisting of naphthyl, N, O and S], e.g. 4-nitrobenzene diazonium tetrafluoroborate, is treated with a fluoro Lewis acid such as boron trifluoride ether complex, antimony pentafluroride or ferric fluoride at -20 to 150°C, preferably -20 to 130°C to produce a compound of formula III, e.g. 4- fluoronitrobenzene, useful as an intermediate for medicines. When the reaction is performed under the irradiation of light (near UV light of 2000-4000), the reaction proceeds at a lower temperature and in a better yield.
