PURPOSE: To easily obtain the subject compound on an industrial scale under low reaction pressure in a state to enable easy separation and recovery of catalyst without causing the corrosion problem of the apparatus by reacting an aromatic nitro compound with carbon monoxide in the presence of a specific catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound can be produced by reacting an aromatic nitro compound (e.g. nitrobenzene or 5-nitro-resorcinol) with carbon monoxide at 100-300°C (preferably 130-250°C) under 1-300atm (preferably 30-200atm) in the presence of a catalyst, comprising (A) palladium or its compound and (B) a heteropolyacid containing molybdenum or vanadium (e.g. 12- molybdophosphoric acid). Concretely, the aromatic nitro compound is dissolved in a solvent, the catalyst is dissolved or dispersed in a solvent, the compound and the catalyst are charged to a reactor, carbon monoxide is pressed into the reactor and the content is heated to a prescribed.
