PURPOSE: To obtain an aromatic ketone useful as a polymerization inhibitor, a fixing agent for perfumery, etc., in high conversion, selectivity and yield, by the catalytic vapor-phase oxidation of a diphenylmethane derivative with O2 in the presence of a catalyst containing a specific catalytic active substance.
CONSTITUTION: An aromatic ketone is prepared by the catalytic vapor-phase oxidation of a diphenylmethane derivative of formula I (R is 1W3C alkyl; m1 and n1 are 0W5) or formula II (m2 and n2 are 0W4) with molecular oxygen in the presence of a catalyst containing (A) a lead oxide and (B) one or more compounds selected from TiO2, ZrO2, SnO2 and CeO2 as active substance, at a vapor concentration of 0.08W1.0vol%, 280W550°C, and a space velocity of 200W 6,000Hr-1 (S.T.P.). The amount of the compound (A) in the catalyst is 1W90% as PbO, and that of the component (B) is 10W99%. The components (A) and (B) may be used in the form of a compound oxide such as lead titanate (e.g. PbTiO3, PbTi3O7, etc.).
