PURPOSE: The reaction between a specific phenolic compound and an aromatic dicarboxylic dichloride in the presence of an inorganic base compound is followed by the reaction of the product with another aromatic dicarboxylic dichloride to produce the titled copolymer with highly alternate molecular arrangement.
CONSTITUTION: One mole of a dihydric phenol of formula I or II (Z is 1W9C alkylene, O, S; X1, X2 are H, chlorine atom) is combined with 0.3W0.7mol of (A) an aromatic dicarboxylic dichloride such as terephthaloyl chloride and they are made to react with each other in a mixture of water and a solvent inmiscible with water such as dichloromethane in the presence of an inorganic base compound such as lithium hydroxide. Then, the phenolic hydroxyls in the reaction mixture are neutralized with the above inorganic base and another aromatic dicarboxylic dichloride (B) other than component A such as isophthaloyl chloride is added thereto to produce the objective copolymer.
