To easily obtain the subject compound, in a relatively high purity and at a low cost, useful as a raw material for production of polyimides and polymers for use in the electronic field, by selectively hydrogenating a specific aromatic acetylene compound with a noble metal catalyst.
This compound of formula II is obtained by selectively hydrogenating the triple bond(s) of (A) a compound of formula I (Ar is a group containing at least one aromatic ring, e.g. phenyl, naphthyl, anthracenyl, diphenyl or fluorenyl which may be substituted with one or more functional groups; (n) is 1-4.) with (C) hydrogen, for example, under a hydrogen pressure at 1 bar at 20-60°C in the presence of (B) a noble metal catalyst (e.g. prepared by bearing a subgroup VIII metal, specifically, rhodium, ruthenium or platinum on a support, such as calcium carbonate or barium sulfate).
