PRODUCTION OF ARYL-IMIDO-PERALKANOIC ACID

PURPOSE: To continuously produce an aryl-imido-peralkanoic acid used as a bleaching agent in low-temp. cleaning of a textile product and in particular, ε-phthalimido-peralkanoic acid.
CONSTITUTION: An aryl-imido-peralkanoic acid represented by formula II is obtained by reacting an aryl-imido-alkanoic acid represented by formula I (wherein: A is a benzene or naphthalene ring optionally having at least one substituent or more specifically, at least one carboxyl substituent; each of R1 and R2 is H or an optionally substituted 1-4C alkyl group; and (n) is an integer of 3 to 7) with hydrogen peroxide at 10 to 35°C in the presence of a strong acid having a pK value of ≤3 or preferably ≤1, and in the presence of a halogenated solvent selected from methylene chloride and chloroform. In the production, the raw material, i.e., the aryl-imido-alkanoic acid represented by the formula I is dissolved in the above solvent in an amount adjusted so as to be equal to or smaller than the solubility threshold of the aryl-imido-alkanoic acid in the solvent at the reaction temp. and also, so as to be equal to or higher than the stoichiometrically equivalent amount of the aryl-imido- alkanoic acid to the solubility threshold of the aryl-imido-peralkanoic acid represented by the formula II in the solvent at the reaction temp., to obtain a solution and then, the resultant solution is continuously reacted with a hydrogen peroxide aq. solution, in the presence of the above strong acid supplied in a molar ratio of the strong acid to the alkanoic acid of ≤2 or preferably, ≤1.
