PURPOSE: To readily produce the subject compounds in a very mild condition while remarkably improving the selectivity of the disulfide and facilitating separation of the catalyst by carrying out a condensation reaction between an aromatic compound and a sulfur compound in the presence of a heterogeneous catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An aromatic compound (e.g. 4-bromodiphenyl ether) of formula I (X is 0 or S; RA is any organic residue; R1 to R4 are H, an alkyl or an alkoxy) is subjected to a condensation reaction with a sulfur compound (e.g. sulfur monochloride) in the presence of a heterogeneous catalyst (Silica gel is essentially preferable) to obtain a disulfide compound [e.g. bis[4-(4-bromophenoxy) phenyl] disulfide] of formula II. The above-mentioned synthetic method is important as a method for synthesizing various kinds of monomers for thermal polymerization since aromatic disulfides, especially having a terminal halogen atom can be synthesized.
