PURPOSE: To produce relatively easily the title resin useful as a polymerization initiator, by reacting an azobisphenol with a dicarboxylic acid chloride and performing the interfacial polymerization of the product, a polycarbonate precursor, and optionally, an azo-free bisphenol compound.
CONSTITUTION: The title resin is produced by the interfacial polymerization of a comp ound (A) having one azo group in the main chain and alcoholic hydroxyl groups on both ends (e.g., a compound of formula I, II or III), a dicarboxylic acid dichloride (B) (e.g., isophthaloyl chloride or maleoyl chloride), a carbonate precursor (C) (e.g., bischloroformate of bisphenol) and, optionally, an azo-free bisphenol compound [e.g., bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)methane]. In the process compound A is previously reacted with compound B. According to the above process, the title resin can be prepared relatively easily, and a block copolymer can be obtained in a high conversion by using it as an initiator.
