PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a benzamide derivative which is useful as an intermediate for insecticide or acaricide by reaction of N-methoxymethylbenzamide derivative with trifluoromethoxybiphenyl (derivative) using a specific solvent and an acid catalyst.
SOLUTION: In (A) nitromethane or nitrobenzene as a solvent, the reaction of (C) a compound of formula I (X1 and X2 are each Cl, F; Me is methyl) with (D) a compound of formula II (R is H, F, a 1-3C alkyl, a 1-3C alkoxy) is carried out in the presence of (B) sulfuric acid as an acid catalyst to give the objective compound of formula III. In a preferred reaction, the amounts of the components A and B are 1-100 equivalents per an equivalent of the component C, respectively, the reaction temperature is -30-+80°C.
