To produce the subject compounds capable of reducing the consumption of expensive palladium catalysts and useful as an intermediate for producing medicines, agrochemicals, etc., at a low cost by recovering the catalysts without requiring an activating treatment.
(A) A compound represented by the formula Ar-X (Ar is an aromatic which may have a substituent group; X is a halogen or trifluoromethanesulfonate) [e.g. 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)bromobenzene] is reacted with carbon monoxide and a hydroxy compound represented by the formula R2OH (R2 is H or a 1-20C alkyl) (e.g. water) in the presence of a catalyst comprising palladium and phosphines and a base and (B) a compound represented by the formula Ar-COOR2 is separated from the reactional system of the step A. (C) A compound represented by the formula Ar-X, a base and carbon monoxide are added into the reactional system of the step B and reacted therewith.
