Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optically uniform intermediate for synthesizing octahydroindole-2-carboxylic acid having an activity such as inhibition of an angiotensin converting enzyme so as to avoid racemate resolution.
SOLUTION: A compound of formula I [(n) is 1, 2 or 3; R is a 1-17C acyl; R1 is a 1-6C alkyl or the like] is treated with Raney nickel in a proper solvent (e.g. anhydrous EtOH) to provide the objective compound of formula II [R3 is H or a 1-17C acyl; R4 is H, a 1-6C alkyl or the like] already having desirable configuration at carbon atom C-2.
