Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound free from coloring and useful as a gelling agent, epoxy resin, etc., in high purity and high yield by reacting hexahydroxyhexane with a naphthoaldehyde compound in a cyclohexane solvent in the presence of an acid catalyst.

CONSTITUTION: A compound expressed by formula I such as D-sorbitol is reacted with a compound expressed by formula II (-CHO group is located at the αposition or β position of naphthalene ring; R1 is H or 1-10C alkyl) such as 1-naphthoaldehyde in a cyclohexane solvent in the presence of an acid catalyst such as p-toluenesulfonic acid to provide the objective compound expressed by formula III.
