To provide a method for producing bishenol F excellent in purity and quality, by which an after treatment of the reaction of phenol with formaldehyde for producing bisphenol F can be simplified.
In the production of bisphenol F by using oxalic acid or phosphoric acid as a catalyst, distillation for recovering phenol and purifying distillation for removing scarcely remaining phenol are carried out at temperatures in the range of 120-160°C in the presence of the acidic catalyst which has not been deactivated completely or partially after the reaction of phenol with formaldehyde. Under the conditions, bisphenol F is not decomposed, accordingly the purity of the bisphenol F is not lowered and the deactivation process of the acidic catalyst is simplified or omitted. Thus, pure bisphenol F excellent in quality is obtained with a simpler pretreatment.
