PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compds. at a high speed in a high yield by condensing aldehyde containing H at the α-position such as isobutanal in multi- phase reaction environment in the presence of a phase transferring catalyst and an alkali substance.
CONSTITUTION: An aldehyde represented by formula I (wherein R1 and R2 are each 1-4C alkyl, pref., CH3) is condensed in multi-phase reaction environment in the presence of a phase transferring catalyst and an alkali substance at 40-150°C under 0.8-4 atm to obtain a compd. represented by formula II and/or its monoester represented by formula III and/or formula IV. As the phase transferring catalyst, a quaternary ammonium compd., a quaternary phosphonium compd. or polyalkylene glycol ether is used in an amt. of 0.25-4 mol.% of starting aldehyde and this catalyst can be recovered after reaction to be reused. According to the amt. of the catalyst, it can be controlled whether diol or monoester is mainly formed or a mixture of them is formed.
