PURPOSE: To produce the titled epoxy resin having low melt viscosity and being readily withdrawn from a reaction kettle, by reating specified two alkanes with an epihalohydrin and, then, dehydrohalogenating the product.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture (mol. ratio 1W4:1) of a bis(hydroxyphenyl)-alkane and a bromine-substituted 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)alkane and an epihalohydrin in an amount of 3 times, by mol., as much as the mixture are subjected to an addition reaction at 30W90°C for 4W6hr in the presence of an addition catalyst, e.g., NaOH. Then, a dehydrohalogenating agent such as an alkali metal hydroxide is added to the reaction product, the resulting mixture is subjected to a dehydrohalogenation reaction at 60W90°C for several hr and the excess epihalohydrin and the formed alkali metal halide are removed to obtain a normally liquid, bromine-containing epoxy resin, bromine content ≥16wt%.
