PURPOSE: To provide a process for producing a carbon fiber/aluminum alloy metal-based composite material having excellent strength characteristics.
CONSTITUTION: This process for producing the carbon fiber/aluminum alloy metal-based composite material comprises producing the composite material with an aluminum alloy by subjecting carbon fibers 3 to coating 4 of carbon materials and using such carbon fibers and more specifically producing the composite material having the excellent strength characteristics of simultaneously exhibiting a high level in both of tensile strength and compressive strength and having a small diameter of about ≤10μm in diameter. The boundary strength is assured at some level by the coating, by which the buckling of the small-diameter carbon fibers at the time of compression is prevented and the occurrence of cracking at the time of pulling is suppressed. The material which is excellent only in either of the tensile strength or the compressive strength is, heretofore producible by the small-diameter carbon fibers; whereas, the material which is excellent in both characteristics is obtainable by this invention.
