Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a carbon fiber readily stabilizable and suitable for using in a high-strength composite.
CONSTITUTION: This carbon fiber production process comprises fiber formation through melt blow from a petroleum pitch containing a large amount of an aromatic component having α-hydrogen in an amount of about 20 mol% to about 40 mol% based on the mol number of hydrogen present in the pitch, having a softening point of at least 244°C, containing about 15-40 wt.% of xylene insoluble components, 0-about 5.0 wt.% of quinoline insoluble components and about 0.1-4 wt.% of sulfur, having a calking value of 65-90 wt.%, and having 0-about 5 wt.% of a mesophase content.
